A steam trap fails in two opposite directions, and the expensive one is the direction that makes no noise and shows no symptom.

Fail it closed and condensate backs up. Slow warm-up, a cold length of line, water hammer, someone raising a job. It gets found because it is a nuisance.
Fail it open and it passes live steam straight into the condensate return, every hour of every day. Nothing on the plant looks wrong. The boiler just works a little harder and the fuel bill carries it.
The expensive trap failure is the one that keeps the process running perfectly while it vents the boiler into the return line. No downtime, no complaint — just a fuel bill that climbs a little every month.
A trap that is working and a trap that has failed open look identical from a walkway. One is measured. The other is assumed.
A steam trap that has failed open wastes fuel quietly, every hour it runs. If the last survey skipped the traps that seemed fine, that is usually where the loss is sitting.
On your last trap survey, was every trap actually tested, or were the ones that looked fine left alone? It matters most where the trap population has not been surveyed in years.

OMNIX runs ultrasonic and thermal trap surveys — every trap tested, tagged, and the loss reported in kg per hour. Each trap is recorded as passing, blocked, blowing through or healthy; the loss is converted into an annual fuel cost, trap by trap, and replacements are ranked by payback period. Bare and damaged lagging is noted on the same visit, along with where condensate is being lost and what returning it is worth. You receive a tagged trap register and a loss statement in rupees per year, so the repair decision reaches management as a number, not an opinion.
